Barb, I left a comment on your freewrite about your home and discomfort with it, but then I thought it sounded bossy or preachy or whatever. I'll post it here, but please know I'm not trying to sound...superior or sassy or anything like that.

These comments almost all sound very confrontational. And some are even unloving. It's not as if you need your husband's permission to make changes. He's not your master, I'm guessing.
Since the house belongs to both of you equally, what about simply stating that you need to add some light into the paneled room and wonder if he'd like to look at store samples with you or trust your judgement on the matter.

fwiw, painting paneling is a great idea. Also, draping a sheer fabric works wonderfully, too. Drape it over the entire wall and add filmy shapes and sequines to it.
